“Creativity is just connecting things. When you ask creative people how they did something, they feel a little guilty because they didn’t really do it, they just saw something. It seemed obvious to them after a while” – Steve Jobs Courtesy of Brainyquote

Iporfolio What is creativity?
What is creativity? Do we all possess this ability or is it a special gift or a skill to be honed and developed?
I found after research on creativity there are very few clear definitions available but i did find these:
The use of the imagination or original ideas, esp. in the production of an artistic work. ( Google)
Margaret Boden describes creativity as;"The capability to come up with ideas or artefacts that are new, surprising and valuable. The ideas and artefacts are very open categories and can include basically anything
produced by humans such as poems, concepts, paintings, meals, &c." (Boden, 1996)
My own understanding of what creativity is - Is a sense of bright ideas, or new ideas popping up to solve problems, give direction or express oneself.
It appears to me that everyone has creative ability as an innate part of being human, because we are all creating something "new" every day we live. It is hoped that over the course of study we will become more aware of how to tap into the creative process, to learn about why some people have more creativity than others and in what way can we help ourselves and others foster creative thought within us? It will be interesting to see if mere attention on a subject allows creativity to flow or whether we have to acquire skills to unravel our talent to develop creativity.
Plato as I found in Margaret Boden's book Dimensions of Creativity is quoted as thinking that creativity is impossible "A poet is holy , and never able to compose until he has become inspired and is beside himself and reason is no longer in him…for not by art does he utter these, but by power divine" Plato ( Boden,1996)
I have always considered our everyday lives to be the expression of our own natural creativity, how we go about work, family life, our cooking and doing all the things that make up our lives. We utilise our talents, develop skills and become aware of what those inherent talents may be as each day we use creaivity in just being.
Is it just letting go and allowing the deepest thoughts to come to the surface or is it being more relaxed, well rested hence alert and aware of everything around us so we maximise opportunities for the creative process?
To date, in my research on creativity I have just come across more and more questions rather than any clear tangible answer or definition of what creativity is perhaps this is due to the intangible nature of creative thought and expression?
I found this quote by Maslow (1968 ) "It is better to make a first rate soup than a second rate painting." ( Young MD,1985) that describes to me the art of using our creativity whatever it is to the best we can in any endevour. As long as we gain and feel value in our creativity is all that matters.
" Creativity is a life adventure the actualizing of our potential and can be thought of as the expression of ourselves in our becoming- our "being becoming" ( Young MD ,1985)
Although creativity is not just "being" it appears that creative people can reset the conditions so that new ideas can repeatably come up and is followed by skill and talent so that our creative thought can be acted upon.
I will return here during the course of study to define creativity by personnel experience after the focus on it for 13 weeks.
