Week 6 - Project Two: Art + Public Space (continued)
Week 6 Web Based Research
Research the artists listed below who make artwork for public spaces then
respond to a selected work
• Olafur Eliasson
• Christo & Jean Claude
• Antony Gormley
• Richard Serra
• Doris Salcedo (Turbine Hall)
Collect images and information about the above artists and their site specific
works – remember to reference your sources. Record your research and
notationsin your visual diary.23
Week 6 Exercise 4: The Maquette: Placement
Subject
Communicating your intentions for your proposed artwork is important. The
site, placement and scale of an artwork can influence how the artwork is read.
Instructions
Use your digital camera to document your maquette from various angles, at
various times of day and in various lights. Choose the most appropriate
image and use it to collage the image of your maquette into the image of
your site. You don’t need to be proficient at computer graphics to do this.
Just a simple printer and basic image editor (so that you can adjust the size
and scale of the artwork and site) will give you the images needed to collage
the work together. Alternatively you may print out your images and cut and
paste the image of your maquette onto the image of your site then scan or
re-photograph it for submission. Or you might like to use a combination of
photographs and drawing.
Things to consider
• Did any of your images reveal new (previously un-noticed) aspects of
your maquette?
• Try a few variations- what happens if you change the scale? Does
making the proposed artwork larger or smaller alter it?What
happens if you change the site?
Tip: refer to your Ex 3 public art research and notations in regard to location and context.
Tip 2: An image of yourmaquette affixed to a light piece of cardboard and a pop-stick for holding
can be useful for testing scale in situ.
